5 Ways to Improve Your Self-Esteem

What comes into mind when you hear self-esteem? What is self-esteem? Self-esteem is how we value and perceive ourselves. We also think about self-esteem as confidence in one’s worth and abilities and self-respect. That being said, there has been many research that states having healthy self-esteem can influence your motivation, your mental well-being, and your overall quality of life. Some key elements of self-esteem includes:

  • Self-confidence

  • Feelings of security

  • Identity

  • Sense of belonging

  • Feeling of competence

However, as human beings sometimes we might struggle with having self-esteem. Life can bring many challenges. For example, you may believe that others are better than you, focusing on your weaknesses, or experiencing fear, self-doubt, and worry. Having low-esteem can lead to mental health disorders such as anxiety or depression. But you’re not alone, we have 5 ways to help build your self-esteem.


1. Monitor self-talk: When you find yourself being aware of having unhelpful thoughts, practicing daily affirmations. Affirmations are positive assertions, you can either say out aloud or write them down.



2. Notice when you’re comparing yourself to others: Pay attention to when you’re comparing yourself to others and how it makes you feel by being mindful.



3. Surround yourself with positive people: Surround yourself with people who may see your potential and respect you for you.



4. Practice self-care and self-compassion: Practice forgiving yourself for past mistakes and be kind to yourself. Developing a self-care routine can help improve your self-esteem.



5. Develop a daily gratitude practice: Practice gratitude journals by writing down what you’re grateful for everyday.
