Workplace Stress: How to Manage Pressure and Stay Productive

workplace stress

Whether you're a CNA, teacher, chef, or therapist, working in any field requires a level of socializing, collaboration, and communication. However, with these interactions can also come stress, whether it's managing difficult clients, handling workplace conflicts, or balancing multiple tasks at once.

Stress, which is defined as a state of mental or emotional strain or tension, has the ability to impact us in a multitude of ways, whether emotionally, physically, or mentally. Stress can arguably be considered an inevitable part of any job, but how we manage and cope with that stress plays a crucial role in maintaining both our well-being and professional success.

Here are 4 ways you can manage workplace stress and remain productive:

1. Practice Mindfulness

Practicing mindfulness at work can help to manage stress because it encourages you to focus on the present moment rather than ruminating on the stressor. An example of this could be using the STOP Technique. Let’s try it together!

Stop what you’re doing and take a moment to pause.

Take a few Deep Breaths.

Observe what’s going on within. What emotions are coming up?

Proceed mindfully, taking into consideration what you’ve just noticed. Ask yourself: What do I need right now?

2. Maintain a Healthy Work-Life Balance

A healthy work-life balance is necessary for preventing burnout and enhancing your well-being, like setting a time limit for checking work emails, disabling notifications after your workday ends, or using a familiar landmark on your commute home to signal the end of your workday. This can help to reduce overlap and set boundaries when it comes to professional and personal time.

3. Take Regular Breaks

Taking regular breaks is essential for maintaining focus and reducing stress, but we understand that with busy schedules, it can be challenging to step away from tasks. Taking a few minutes, even if it’s two, to stretch, breathe, or grab a quick snack can make a big difference, and it's okay to start small when work is demanding.

4. Seek Support from Others

Whether it's reaching out to a colleague for advice or talking to a friend, even small moments of connection can provide relief, and it's okay to ask for help when needed. Seeking support from others is key to managing stress and staying motivated.
