5 Tips to Help You Find the Right Therapist

Finding the right therapist for you can be an overwhelming process but don't let the process discourage you. Here are some steps you can take to help you find a therapist.

1️. Research Cost & Benefits

Consider what neighborhood you would like to find a therapist in. Cost per session can vary by therapist and neighborhood.

Contact your insurance to review benefits for Mental Health treatment. Remember to ask if you have in network and/or out of network benefits.

2. Check out Psychology Today

While Psychology Today may be oversaturated with therapist listings, it is a good starting place to at least identify 3-5 potential therapists. Think of Psychology Today as your appetizer, it will leave you wanting to know more about a specific therapist.

3. Visit Therapists' Website

From here, visit each therapist website to learn more about them. Review for content, personality, energy, and try to catch a vibe.

4. Schedule a consultation

Once you've reviewed the therapist's website, schedule a consultation if you'd like. Most therapists offer a free consultation. Having a consultation is an important step in the process for both you and the therapist. It's your opportunity to tease out additional info you may want to know about the therapist. There's no such thing as a dumb question so don't be afraid to ask.

5. Schedule & keep your first appointment

Way to go! Your first appointment may not feel like therapy, be prepared to answer questions about you and complete paperwork. However, this still gives you an opportunity to continue building a relationship with your therapist. Remember that any relationship may start off rocky, so give yourself (and your therapist) time to build a rapport. It's okay to repeat these steps to find the right fit for you.
